San Antonio’s main thoroughfare isn’t a road—it’s the River Walk. In 1929, local architect Robert H. Hugman presented his innovative vision for the city: a series of shops and restaurants lining the San Antonio River, one story below street level, as it courses through a five-mile section downtown. Today, the meandering San Antonio River Walk is a charming, pedestrian-friendly way to explore the city’s main attractions, including the San Antonio Museum of Art, Tex-Mex restaurants, the open-air Arneson River Theatre, and the 300-year-old Spanish mission known as the Alamo. The famous 1836 battle between Mexican troops and Texan settlers is remembered by thousands of visitors who tour the battlegrounds and peruse museum exhibits free of charge. If you’re tired of the city bustle, decamp for nearby Texas Hill Country, where you can go tubing on a river in New Braunfels or explore quaint Fredericksburg, known for its German heritage.
La Villita, Spanish for “little village,” is San Antonio’s oldest neighborhood, settled nearly 300 years ago. Browse stalls of handmade wool blankets, turquoise jewelry, copper wares, and folk art.
King William Historic District, a 25-block area south of the San Antonio River, is home to elegant 19th-century homes. Take a stroll to admire the Victorian and Greek Revival-style architecture.
San Antonio’s hottest new neighborhood is Pearl, named after the area’s 19th- and 20th-century fixture, The Pearl Brewing Company. The recently revitalized 16-block area encompasses farm-to-table restaurants, bars, and boutiques.
San Antonio Missions National Historic Park is a collection of four well-preserved, 18th-century missions; hop on a bike and pedal the 15 miles between them to see them all.
San Antonio is wonderfully temperate in the winter months from November through March, when average highs range from 62 to 74 degrees. Summer is hot and humid, with July and August highs regularly reaching the upper 90s. Summer rains provide a brief reprieve from the heat.
