The Garden City

Combining its historic British influence with Vancouver Island’s First Nation roots, Victoria is a thoroughly modern city entirely its own. Visitors will delight in exploring the flourishing food scene concentrated in the pedestrian-friendly downtown. Brunch is especially big in Victoria, and worth standing in line for as the locals do most weekends. Happy hour is practically its own event, with a world-renowned craft cocktail scene. But Victorians know how to work up an appetite as well, taking advantage of their proximity to dozens of hiking and mountain biking trails, or kayaking in the Strait of San Juan de Fuca.

Fresh Things to Do

Featured Activity

  • Exploring British Columbia's Capital

Take in Victoria’s Best Sights on Foot: Stroll through downtown Victoria, window-shopping along Fort Street, before stopping at the impressive 130-year old Craigdarroch Castle. Local coal baron, Robert Dunsmuir, built this turreted mansion to display his wealth (and impress his wife), but he sadly died before it could be completed. Peek inside at the stained glass windows, sumptuous Persian carpets, and detailed woodwork. Next, head to Christ Church Cathedral, notable for its Gothic stone façade and outdoor labyrinth. Check the calendar for the church’s concert schedule, featuring choral and organ performances. Finish at Beacon Hill Garden, a peaceful Eden in the midst of the city, and the largest of Victoria’s many gardens. In addition to the impeccable landscaping, visitors can enjoy the children’s farm and petting zoo, lawn bowling, and the world’s largest totem pole, a nod to Victoria’s first residents, the Songhee tribe. Finish your tour with a cocktail at Clive’s Classic Lounge, consistently nominated as one of the world’s best hotel bars.
